San Sebastian centennial

Three typographic films for a hundredth anniversary, where every name arrives as a drop of blue ink on paper.

A commission from San Sebastian for its centennial, 1925 to 2025, told through the names of the organizations that make up the community. I made three pieces: an audio-visual presentation of every organization in the order they were founded, a typographic setting of the loyalty pledge, and a short visualizer that turns the fleur-de-lis into the founding year.

Ink first, letters second

Each name starts as a loose blot of blue ink soaking into grainy paper. The blot gathers, finds its edges, and settles into Greek letters or a seal. Then the letters soften back into ink and the next name grows out of the same stain.

A window light drifts across the paper the whole time, and the camera never stops breathing. It keeps a list of names feeling like a document someone is holding, not a slideshow.

Thought process

  1. 01

    Find the material

A hundred years is a document, not a hype reel. Ink on paper felt right: it is how the organizations would have signed their names.

  2. 02

    Make the transition the idea

Instead of cutting between names, each name grows out of the last one's ink. The blot is the transition.

  3. 03

    Keep it breathing

A slow window light and a drifting camera stop a long list of names from feeling like a slideshow.

  4. 04

    One voice, three pieces

The presentation, the pledge and the visualizer share the same ink, paper and timing so they play as one set.
